Co-Founder & Research Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media (CASM) at Demos, Presenter on the BBC’s Click & Author of ‘The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab’
Carl Miller is the co founder and Research Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media (CASM) at Demos, the UK’s leading cross party political think tank. He leads a specialist team exploring how the growth of the digital world and artificial intelligence is reshaping politics, society, crime, journalism, warfare, business and everyday life. His insights are sought by organisations across the public and private sectors; recent speaking clients include Shell, the UK Parliament and the Home Office.
Carl speaks internationally about the impact of the digital revolution and what it means for leaders, institutions and citizens. His work helps organisations understand how technology is changing power, influence and decision making, and how they can stay ahead of these shifts. In 2021 he won the US-Paris Tech Challenge, recognising his work at the intersection of technology, data and society.
In 2018 he published his first book, The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab, an exploration of how social media is transforming power around the world. The book examines how a single post can damage a political career, disrupt a global company or trigger unrest on city streets. It also explores the rapid growth of online crime and the changing nature of influence and control in the digital age. The book won the Transmission Prize in 2019.
Alongside his research, Carl presents programmes for the BBC’s flagship technology show Click. He has written for publications including Wired, New Scientist, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph and The Guardian. He is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London and a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Carl is also a Fellow of the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime, an Associate of the Imperial War Museum and a member of the Society Board of the British Computer Society.
