Daliso Chaponda 3WUnusually for comedians, Daliso Chaponda delivered a TEDx talk in Manchester in 2022. His talk was titled Unlikely Partners: Comedy and Pain. He put his case forward that during his performance on Britain’s Got Talent he joked about his home country’s poverty. Daliso told the audience he was from Malawi in South East Africa, saying “If any of you don’t know where that is, it’s where Madonna adopted all the babies from… I do miss my little brother.” The whole idea of the TEDx talk was to show, painful and unpleasant things do happen but it is often the case comedy will follow.

Daliso started out in comedy almost 20 years ago when he stayed in Canada where he had been studying. He performed at various clubs there making a name for himself. He moved to the UK in 2006 and was immediately spotted by comedy management. One of his very first UK events was doing the warm up for John Bishop. The UK’s comedy clubs and venues were now open to Daliso. This also helped in getting him noticed in Australia and also in South Africa where he also performed.

The Edinburgh Fringe was soon to beckon and in 2008 he starred in the Fringe’s Best of the Fest. It was in 2009 when he returned to Malawi to perform and later in 2012 he toured Africa with his show Laughrica. One of the nights was back in Malawi where he made a joke about the country’s flag. It went down well with the audience but the Malawi government didn’t take it so lightly. He was then threatened with arrest for insulting Malawi’s National Emblem

Daliso Chaponda has appeared a number of times on QI and BBC’s The Apprentice You’re Fired. He also won an episode of Celebrity Pointless on BBC.
