Professional Scottish PGA Golfer & Winner of The Amateur Championship
Gordon Sherry is best known for winning the Amateur Championship in 1995, and playing in The Open and the US Masters. He turned professional in 1996.
Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, on 8th April, 1974, Gordon attended Stirling University and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. During this formative period his golfing skills were honed and developed under the guidance of his coach, mentor, and long time friend, the late Bob Torrance.
Gordon Sherry’s early golf career went from strength to strength, and he reached the final of the Amateur Championship in 1994. The same year he represented Great Britain and Ireland in the St Andrews Trophy and the Eisenhower Trophy. His famous victory in the Amateur Championship the following year marked a sustained period of success.
He finished 4th in the 1995 Scottish Open at Carnoustie and then had a whirlwind week at St Andrews during the Open where he played with Watson, Norman, Nicklaus, Singh, Mickelson and Calcavecchia. The moment everyone remembers was when Gordon had a hole-in-one whilst playing with Watson and Nicklaus.
Also in 1995, Gordon played in the victorious Walker Cup team at Royal Porthcawl opposite a young Tiger Woods. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon played against Notah Begay III and Chris Riley in the singles matches and not Tiger. After participating in the 1996 US Masters in Augusta, Georgia, he turned professional and competed on tour until 2004, experiencing a rollercoaster ride of results.
Now a fully qualified PGA professional, Gordon runs his own business, GordonSherryGolf which specialises in corporate golf activities as well as the elite mentoring of aspiring youngsters. This has now led to the development of a Sports Management Business called Goliath Sports Assets where Gordon and his team manage the performance aspect and commercial aspects of players and athletes on both sides of the Atlantic, whilst also catering for the needs of Sponsors, Corporate Partners and VIPS.
Gordon now lives in Helensburgh with his wife Alison and their five children, and is a member of several prestigious golf clubs including Loch Lomond, Kilmarnock (Barassie) in Scotland, and The Golf Club of Georgia in the US.
At 6ft 8in tall, Gordon Sherry holds the record for being the tallest man ever to play in the US Masters.
Gordon Sherry is available for after dinner speaking and corporate keynotes. He tells a truly unique, sometimes hilarious, and fascinating story. He looks at his life, his golf development, the ups and downs and recounts stories from playing alongside the top players and legends of the game on the very biggest golfing stages.
