Physicist, Meteorologist, Former BBC Scotland Weather Forecaster & Presenter, Science Education Consultant & Climate Advocate

Heather Reid OBE is a physicist. She is also a meteorologist who spent 15 years as BBC Scotland’s chief weather forecaster and presenter. During this time, ‘Heather the Weather’ as she was affectionately known, combined her TV role with promoting science to young people and the general public. She has worked tirelessly at science festivals, school events and also science centres to highlight the importance of studying science. This work has led to several awards including, the prestigious Kelvin Medal from the Institute of Physics. She has honorary doctorates from the University of Paisley and the University of Glasgow. Heather received an OBE in 2006 for her services to physics.

Heather now uses her science engagement experience as a freelance education consultant. She does this with a variety of organisations. Heather specialises in promoting climate change as a context for interdisciplinary learning. She regularly contributes on topics such as sustainability and renewable energy. Also the topics of global citizenship and the importance of science. For a number of years she has worked with teachers. Heather delivers highly successful science education resources and activities for schools and local authorities.

She has also delivered keynote lectures at education events across the UK. Heather continues to inspire audiences with her passion for science. She is an experienced conference host, especially in the areas of education, science and innovation. Her knowledge and understanding of the educational landscape often assists clients in the planning and delivery of events.

Heather holds an honorary lectureship in Glasgow University’s school of physics and astronomy. She is a former trustee and Non-Executive Director of the Glasgow Science Centre. She is also a member of the Scottish Governments’ Science and Engineering Education Advisory Group.

Apart from her speaking engagements, Heather Reid OBE has continuously been in demand as a facilitator, host and chair. With the onset of Covid in 2020 Heather was suddenly thrown into the world of Virtual events. She is now highly experienced in all manor of virtual events. These include the use of virtual platforms such as Teams and Zoom.

Heather Reid lives in Glasgow with her daughter and husband, Professor Miles Padgett. Miles holds the Kelvin Chair of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. In their free time they are often found at the 7Stanes mountain biking centres. Here they can be found testing Newton’s Law’s of Motion whilst on various routes!
