Dr Phil Hammond is a GP, practising at a specialist NHS centre for children and adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome/ME. He is also a journalist, broadcaster and comedian.
Struck Off & Die:
Between 1993 and 2000, Phil and fellow doctor Tony Gardner created the radio series Struck Off & Die. It enjoyed great success on radio and at the Edinburgh Festival. Phil’s presenting credits include five series of Trust Me, I’m a Doctor (BBC), The Motion Show, Pillories of the State (BBC Radio), and BBC One’s Heaven and Earth Show. He also wrote and recorded the BBC Radio 4 comedy 24 Hours to Save the NHS.
Such was its success that 59 Minutes to Save the NHS received strong, ratings-boosting reviews at the Edinburgh Festival, followed by a nationwide tour. Phil continues to write and develop material for broadcast with the BBC and is a highly regarded humorous and keynote speaker for both medical and non-medical audiences.
In 2012, Dr Phil Hammond was shortlisted alongside Andrew Bousfield for the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Investigative Journalism for a Private Eye special report on the treatment of NHS whistleblowers. He has also won awards for broadcasting, popular health journalism, comedy and teaching.
He is Vice President of the Patients’ Association and a patron of Meningitis UK, the Doctors’ Support Network, the Herpes Viruses Association, Patients First and Kissing It Better.

Phil presented five series of Trust Me, I’m a Doctor on BBC Two and has appeared regularly on Have I Got News for You, The News Quiz, The Now Show, The One Show and Countdown. He has also been a Lecturer in Medical Communication at the Universities of Bristol and Birmingham.
Phil’s Radio 4 sitcom about GPs navigating NHS reforms, Polyoaks, was co-written with David Spicer.
Phil has written several books, including Medicine Balls, Trust Me, I’m (Still) a Doctor, and Sex, Sleep or Scrabble?. He has also released DVDs of his tours, including Dr Phil’s Rude Health Show and Confessions of a Doctor.
He continues to tour the UK, having completed his third comedy tour, Games to Play With Your Doctor. His fourth book, Staying Alive: How to Survive the NHS, followed. In 2021, Private Eye published Dr Hammond’s Covid Casebook: The Collected Pandemic Columns of Private Eye’s Medical Correspondent (MD).
