Lord Sebastian Coe set 12 world records and won Olympic gold medals at 1500m in both Moscow and Los Angeles. He then became a Conservative MP and was Private Secretary to William Hague.
He built a close relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and became Chairman of the British Olympic Association. This was a post he held up until 2016.
Sebastian Coe was instrumental in helping with London’s successful 2012 Olympics bid.
He also acts as global advisor to Nike, and operates a string of Seb Coe Health Clubs.
His running career started in the mid 70’s when he won the 800m at the European Indoor Championships in Spain. in 1977 he set a new 800m outdoor record at London’s Crystal Palace. He set three world records in 1979 with the Mile, the 800m and the 1500m. Another world record was to fall in 1980, plus an indoor world record in 1981.
The Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 saw Seb Coe taking silver in the 800m and gold in the 1500m and set a new Olympic Record. In 1989 at the age of 33 he was still ranked UK No1 for both the 800m and the 1500m.
In 2000 Sebastian Coe was awarded a Life Peerage and is now known as The Right Honourable The Lord Coe CH, KBE, Hon FRIBA
