Internationally, he earned 20 caps for Scotland national football team and represented his country at the 1990 World Cup. After retiring as a player, he moved into coaching and management, leading Dumbarton to promotion and later becoming assistant manager at Celtic, where he helped the club win a league and cup double in the 1997–98 season.
