Simon Brodkin used to be know as the comedian Lee Nelson. These days he is storming the comedy circuit, working under his own name.  Simon’s alter ego was the cheeky South Londoner, Lee Nelson who was named “the world’s most famous blagger” by The Daily Telegraph.

Simon Brodkin is also known for his very public pranks. These often involved well known public figures and media personalities.  His Ch4 documentary Britain’s Greatest Hoaxer went global with stunts involving Theresa May who he handed a P45 to whilst she was speaking at the Tory Party Conference. He also managed throw a shed load of money at FIFA president Sepp Blatter.  Even Britain’s Got Talent got pranked when Simon managed to get on stage as an ultra-orthodox Jewish rapper. He actually got four Yes’ from the judges.

In 2014 Simon dressed himself in the same suit and tie as the England squad and plying one of his comedy characters, Liverpool footballer Jason Bent, Simon managed to mix and mingle with the team. This was just as they were about to board their plane for the Brazilian World Cup. Simon (Jason) was eventually led away by security whilst clutching his passport.  As Jason Bent, Simon later tweeted, he was gutted that Roy Hodgson (England Manager) wouldn’t let him on the plane.

Probably Simon Brodkin’s most famous character was the comedian Lee Nelson who Simon also had a number of UK tours with. BBC3 had a hit with Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show and the sketch series, Lee Nelson’s Well Funny People. This is where he released his character the premier league footballer Jason Bent.

TV appearances include Live At The Apollo; The John Bishop Show and also Let’s Dance for Comic Relief. He’s been on Absolutely Fabulous; Children In Need; Sunday Night at The Palladium and Al Murray’s Multiple Personality. Others include Comedy Rocks; Channel 4’s Comedy Gala and Big Brother’s Big Mouth for Ch4.

In 2023 Simon Brodkin was back in Edinburgh with a brand new stand up show Xavier, which SpeakOut went to see. We rated Simon as one of the best comedians at the 2023 Fringe.  He’s had multiple solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and also won the Writer’s Guild Best Newcomer Award for his debut show.
