Sophie Howe is a pioneering advisor to governments and organisations, focusing on embedding future generations thinking, and developing well-being economies. She is not afraid to call out the madness of short term decision making and is known for being a straight talking and inspirational advocate for those yet to be born.

Early Days:

Sophie Howe grew up in Ely, West Cardiff and studied Law and Politics at Cardiff University. At the age of 21, she was elected to Cardiff Council, making her the youngest Councillor in Wales. She would go on to hold multiple roles in local government, as well as being an advisor to two Welsh First Ministers. Next, Sophie was the first Deputy Policy and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, where she led programmes to tackle violent crime and violence against women and girls.

In 2015, following the ground-breaking Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act, Sophie Howe was chosen to be the World’s first Future Generations Commissioner.

It was here she had a statutory role as the guardian of the interests of future generations in Wales. She acted as an advisor and watchdog to the Welsh Government and also other public bodies in Wales.

Described by the Guardian as the “World’s first minister of the Unborn”.

Sophie Howe led high profile interventions around transport planning, education reform sustainability and climate change. She was tasked with challenging the Government and others to demonstrate how they are taking account of future generations. Sophie Howe has represented Wales at the UN and the OECD. She also Chaired the Network of Institutions for Future Generations.

Sophie was named at number 5 in the BBC Women’s Power List and is featured in the Change Now List. This is a list of 25 Women Changing the World. She is an Honorary Fellows of  Cardiff University, and holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Sophie Howe lives in Cardiff with her husband and their five children.

Following the end of her term in 2022, Sophie Howe began advising government’s across the world. This was in addition to advising other private and charitable organisations. Sophie is a fantastic public speaker. She can inspire an audience, by sharing her unique knowledge and passion for societal change and futures thinking. Sophie has spoken to a wide range of audiences about well-being economies and the challenges facing our societies. She has also spoke about national security and public health.
