Top UK Cardiothoracic Surgeon, the Clinical Lead In Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire & Committee Member at the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery
Adrian Levine is one of over 200 cardiothoracic surgeons in the UK, each with a wealth of skill and experience under their scalpel. An eminent leader in his profession, with patients in both the National Health and private medical sectors, Adrian’s experience in medical practice spans two decades and he has performed over 3,500 cases.
Born and raised in South London, the son of two distinguished GPs, Adrian’s attraction to medicine was instinctive from an early age. Undoubtedly, a key influence was his father, Sir Montague Levine who, among many other accolades, had served as physician to the Prime Minister during in the late 1970’s and as Coroner for Inner London South.
Adrian’s background is clearly one where resilience and self-belief played a major part. His most prominent life-moulding experiences are rooted in a succession of roles from working in the sewer to open heart surgery and his clinical training provided wide-ranging experiences in locations such as Melbourne Australia, to in and around London, Newcastle and the West Midlands.
Adrian’s fascination with the heart and its pivotal yet unpredictable nature, emerged during his early undergraduate years. Cardiothoracic medicine was an area which presented the most formidable clinical challenges and for Adrian, the opportunity to advance surgical practices in order to meet them. Now, with one of the biggest cardiac surgical practices in the UK, Adrian is among a select number of surgeons who practice the modern technique of reshaping the heart to avoid heart failure, a highly successful procedure for those patients who are too elderly for transplantation.
Adrian is now the Clinical lead in cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and represents the Trust at local, regional and national level. He is the lead surgeon for the Shropshire-Staffordshire Cardiac Network and has played a central role in a number of reviews of cardiac surgery in the West Midlands. Adrian also sits on a number of NHS committees and at a national level, represents his unit at the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of the UK and Ireland.
As well as his clinical commitments and managerial responsibilities as a senior clinician, Adrian Levine has a major role in training junior doctors and nurses. But for him, there is always another challenge in 2003 a patient’s heart stopped 4 hours after cardiac surgery. Over the following few hours, his chest was re-opened three times and eventually the patient was regrafted on his ICU bed. He had survived even though many of the nursing and junior medical staff reported they felt disorganised and would have performed better if they had a defined and well practised role.
Ever mindful of the opportunity for professionals to ‘raise their game’, Adrian, with the help of a colleague, devised a set of clinical protocols to enable all cardiothoracic practitioners to deal with cardiac arrest and other serious complications on the ward until surgical help arrives. These protocols have now been rolled out throughout Europe and the training programme, Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS), continues to expand.
Adrian Levine’s clinical experiences have left him in no doubt of the advantages of healthy living. This, coupled with his competitive nature, saw him entering the 2008 British Indoor Rowing Championships although any pending success is unlikely to mean a change in career.
In addition to being a well-published researcher and clinician, Adrian Levine is an accomplished public speaker who regularly lectures on a wide range of topics to audiences including health care practitioners and professional associations. Adrian’s life experiences, professionalism and philosophy ensure entertaining and thought-provoking presentations.
