Alan Brazil is on TallkSport. Well, where do we start? International footballer, double UEFA Cup winner, broadcaster, all round good guy and bon viveur. Alan Brazil’s motto is ‘you’re only here for a visit’. This philosophy is reflected in the way he lives his life.

EARLY DAYS:
He was born in 1959, within a stone’s throw of Parkhead, home of Glasgow Celtic FC. Alan showed promise as a footballer from an early age. He was soon playing for Celtic Boys Club, under the watchful eye of legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein. However, with Celtic showing no interest in signing a young Brazil, he journeyed south of the border. There he joined Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town in 1973.

It was at Ipswich that Alan would enjoy his best football. Making over 200 appearances and scoring 80 goals for the ‘Tractor Boys,’ Alan lifted the UEFA Cup in 1981. That same season the club narrowly missed out on winning the League.

Whilst at Ipswich Town, Alan made his first appearance for Scotland. He played a further 12 times for his country, including the 1982 World Cup finals campaign in Spain.

Alan went on to play for Manchester United, Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur. It was at Spurs where he won the UEFA Cup for a second time. Unfortunately in the mid 1980’s aged just 27, Alan’s playing career was suddenly over after a serious back injury.

Fortunately for Alan, his engaging personality was to help him carve out a new career as a broadcaster. Appearances on his local radio station soon brought him to the attention of Sky Sports. It was there he spent most of the 1990’s as a match summarizer and also a co-commentator.

However, it was at the national speech radio station talkSPORT that Alan Brazil was to find his natural broadcasting home. His fondness for going out and having a good time, coupled with his philosophy on life, meant that Alan might possibly turn up, on occasion, a little worse for wear. And therein lay the genius of his show – behaviour that was at times frustrating for the producers suddenly became compulsive listening for millions of listeners, as Alan’s life off-air became inextricably linked to his show on-air.

Today, the ‘Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast’ has a weekly audience of 1.2 million listeners, making it one of the most listened-to radio shows in the country.

Alan Brazil book1In 2006, Alan penned his hilariously engaging autobiography, the aptly named ‘There’s an Awful Lot of Bubbly in Brazil‘. This was a collection of fresh stories of japes, pranks and mishaps. Most usually either started or ended with Alan sipping from a bottle of bubbly.Alan Brazil book2
Described by one critic as, ‘a life-enhancing antidote to the bland life-stories of a gaggle of young Premier League superstars’. Alan’s book became that year’s surprise bestseller but there was more to come. In 2020 another book emerged ‘Only Here for a Visit‘

One of Alan’s great passions is golf, which he tries to find time for when he’s not appearing on radio or TV.
