Former Team GB Curling Skip, Olympic Silver Medallist, Two-Time World Champion, Coach & Performance Director
David Murdoch MBE is a curler from Lockerbie. He is a three time Winter Olympian and Sochi Winter Olympic 2014 silver medallist. His 12 sensational curling matches as skip of the Team GB men at the Sochi Olympics saw his last stones win crucial games to famously include a vital play off against Norway. Here his shot was dubbed by national press as ‘shot of the century’. It also took him to the semi-finals.
An equally brilliant last shot against Sweden to secure a silver medal and Olympic final place. The silver medal win was the first for Team GB men’s curling since the 1924 games. Curling coverage at Sochi was seen for 30 hours and was the most talked about sport on social media. David is looking to compete in a 4th Olympics in 2018.
David was invited to present the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. He had also been speaking on cruise ships and did a carpet curling event for Quartermile Property Group in Edinburgh.
Having curled professionally for nearly 20 years, David Murdoch MBE is a, two World Champion, three time European Champion and a six time National Champion. David’s first tow Olympics saw him finish in impressive 4th and 5th places in Turin and Vancouver.
Curling is in David’s family heritage, his mum and dad, brother and sister all played the game to a high level. David’s brother was a European champion, his sister is now a top coach, his mum works in a curling rink whilst his dad Matt Murdoch was a chairman of the sport’s governing body the Royal Caledonian Curling Club and a three time national curling champion.
David Murdoch MBE has commentated and taken part in studio analysis on curling for Eurosport for many years and Channel 4 for the 2014 Winter Paralympics. He has appeared on many TV & Radio shows. These include: Sport Relief 2014, Daybreak, The Alan Titchmarsh Show, Sky Sports and Sky 1’s Game Changers. Also, BT Sport’s Panel with Tim Lovejoy and Matt Dawson, BBC Radio 2 with Anneka Rice, BBC 5live and Talksport. As a lottery funded athlete, he has also had the pleasure to officially release the National Lottery draw to 10 million viewers. TV included A Question of Sport for BBC1 and the entire team taking on the Eggheads.
In 2022 David Murdoch was awarded an MBE for services to curling.
Between 2018 and 2023 David Murdoch MBE served as national and Olympic coach for British Curling. He then became Curling Canada’s high-performance director and now resides with his family in Canada. David Murdoch MBE is available for virtual talks on motivation, teamwork and leadership.
