BBC Match of the Day Football Commentator, BBC Radio 5 Live Presenter, Robot Wars Commentator & Sunday Mirror Columnist
Jonathan Pearce is one of Britain’s most recognisable football commentators, best known for his many years on Match of the Day with BBC Sport. Across his broadcasting career he has covered numerous men’s and women’s World Cups, as well as European Championships, becoming a familiar voice to football audiences across the UK. Many people also recognise him as the loud, energetic commentator from Robot Wars, where his enthusiastic and dramatic commentary became a key part of the programme’s success during his six years on the show.
Jonathan’s broadcasting career spans radio and television across several major networks. In May 2002 he left Capital Gold Sport after 15 years to join BBC Radio 5 Live, where he became a commentator and presenter on programmes including Sport on Five and 606, covering domestic and international football. He joined the Match of the Day commentary team in August 2004 and remained part of the programme until 2019. Alongside this, he has hosted football shows, presented sports talk programmes and worked as a freelance reporter and commentator across BBC, Channel 5, Sky TV and BBC London radio.
His career began in radio, working for BBC Radio Bristol as a freelance football reporter before moving into sports editor roles at several regional stations including Radio West and Southern Sound. He later became Sports Editor at Capital Radio, where he worked on programmes such as Sportstime, Glory Days and One to One, as well as producing documentaries. During his career he also trained at the National Broadcasting School, where he was awarded the annual scholarship for an intensive postgraduate journalism and broadcasting course. In addition to broadcasting, he has written a regular weekly sports column for the Sunday Mirror since 2002.
Jonathan has received numerous industry awards, including Sony Radio Awards and New York Radio Festival medals for sports commentary and sports programming. His voice has also been used for many commercial voiceover projects across television and radio, including advertising campaigns and television programmes. Away from broadcasting, Jonathan has always had a passion for sport, particularly football. As a teenager he trained with Bristol City and hoped to become a professional player, but a broken leg ended those ambitions and ultimately led him towards a successful career in sports broadcasting instead.
