Joy Dunlop is a leading Scottish broadcaster, Gaelic singer, and educator whose work spans television, radio, music, and cultural advocacy. Known for her eloquence and warmth, she brings energy and expertise to every project.
She is the presenter of SpeakGaelic, a ground-breaking multimedia initiative transforming Gaelic learning across Scotland. Joy also hosts the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, broadcast bilingually on BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Alba. Her credits include weather presenting for BBC Scotland and BBC Alba, and co-hosting the Gaelic-Irish podcast A-nunn ’s Anall.
Gaelic Educator and Journalist
A fluent Gaelic speaker with an honours degree in Gaelic Language and Culture, Joy teaches Gaelic language and song internationally. She’s also an award-winning journalist and bilingual voice-over artist, with writing featured in The Scotsman, The Oban Times, and The Stornoway Gazette. Her work has earned recognition from the Scottish Press Awards and also Highlands and Islands Media Awards.
Acclaimed Gaelic Singer
Joy Dunlop’s music career has taken her across the UK, Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania. She’s released three acclaimed solo albums—Caoir, Dùsgadh, and Faileasan—plus Dithis, a duo album with her brother Andrew. A five-time Gaelic Singer of the Year nominee, she has won both the Royal National Mòd Gold Medal and the Oban Times Gold Medal, and is the only artist to be crowned both Traditional Singer and Traditional Dance Champion at the Pan Celtic Festival. She also performs with the Gaelic/Gaeilge supergroup LAS.
Champion of Gaelic Culture
Joy is the founder and director of Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week), a global celebration of Scottish Gaelic. She conducts the Alba Choir, Scotland’s first Eurovision Choir entry, and leads Ceann an Tuirc, the award-winning Argyll Male Voice Gaelic Choir. She also sings with Atomic Piseag and Ceòlraidh Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu.
