Former ITV News Anchor, BBC ‘Proms’ Presenter, BBC Radio 3 & 4 Host & Finalist on ‘Stricty Come Dancing’

Katie Derham is one of Britain’s best loved TV and Radio presenters. Known for many years as a news anchor on ITV, she’s now the face of the BBC Proms, and a regular presenter on BBC Radio 3 and 4.

Katie’s career started at the BBC as a business journalist in 1993. Working as a producer and reporter on Radio 4’s Moneybox and Financial World tonight, she then presented Moneycheck for 2 years on BBC Five Live, before moving to BBC TV, working as Consumer Affairs Correspondent on Working Lunch and Business Breakfast. She won the Bradford and Bingley Personal Finance Broadcaster of the Year in 1995.

A stint as a roving reporter on Barry Norman’s Film 96 and Film 97, while also reporting for the BBC current affairs programme Here and Now, brought her to the attention of ITN, and in 1998 Katie was asked by them, to be their first ever Media and Arts Correspondent. She was swiftly asked to try her hand at newsreading and in the process became the youngest ever national newsreader, and won the 1999 TRIC Best TV Newcomer award.

12 extremely happy years at ITV news ensued, during which Katie Derham was key to ITV’s coverage of wars, royal weddings, jubilees, elections and budgets, both out on the road and anchoring in the studio. At the same time, she kept one foot in radio, presenting a weekly programme for Classic FM for 8 years, and a Sunday morning talk show for LBC, the travel programme Traveller’s Tree for BBC Radio 4, and from time to time deputizing for Radio 4’s Saturday Live. Outside the ITV Newsroom Katie hosted the Classical Brit awards on ITV for 4 years, and presented a number of ITV documentaries, including a celebration of the Queen’s diamond wedding anniversary, an investigation into interactive journalism and a number of specials for the Tonight with Trevor Macdonald strand. When ITV2 was launched, she presented several seasons of the media programme, Wide Angle.

In 2008 Katie Derham was asked to take part in a BBC programme which would change her life. Maestro, the reality show in which celebrities learned to conduct an orchestra, reminded her just how much she loved music. Sky Arts then helped confirm that by asking her to take part in First Love. This was a programme in which she re-learned the violin, and performed at King’s Place. An invitation arrived to then be the first regular face of the BBC Proms since Richard Baker. This was an offer she couldn’t turn down. In 2010 she left ITV News to start a new chapter.

Katie Derham is now a regular presenter on BBC Radio 3 in the afternoons. She continues to make programmes for Radio 4. There was also a new foreign affairs series for Radio 4 called Global Reach commissioned. She again presented the proms for BBC2 and BBC1. You may also have seen her on Christmas Day presenting John Rutter’s Nativity for BBC2. You’ll often hear her voicing programmes about classical music and dance for BBC4, and she is currently working on a major 3 part BBC2 commission about the history of Brazilian Music.

When not broadcasting, Katie regularly hosts conferences and awards ceremonies. She’s actively involved in a number of charities. Katie is an ambassador for the Princes Trust and Leonard Cheshire Disability. Also, a patron of For Dementia, Arts for Dementia and Eastside Educational Trust.  Plus the St Peter and St James Hospice. She is vice president of Music in Hospitals and the Cambridge Summer Music Festival.

Katie is married to John Vincent, co-founder of Leon Restuarants and founder of Flat Planet. They have 2 daughters, Natasha and Eleanor.
