Former England Test Captain, Fastest Player To Reach 5,000 Test Runs, Author of ‘Coming Back To Me’ & Won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year
Marcus Trescothick MBE is a former England Test captain and one of Somerset’s greatest ever cricketers. A prolific left-handed opener, he earned respect for his attacking style and reliability at the crease, becoming England’s leading century-maker in ODIs during his career. Representing England in 76 Tests and 123 One Day Internationals, Marcus was also a cornerstone of Somerset’s batting line-up, scoring over 26,000 first-class runs. Today, he is an accomplished after-dinner speaker, combining stories from his career with inspiring reflections on resilience, leadership and mental health.
Marcus began his professional career with Somerset in 1993 and soon established himself as a powerful and dependable opener. Making his England debut in 2000, he went on to play a key role in the Test and ODI teams for the next eight years. He became the fastest player to reach 5,000 Test runs in 2005 and achieved three consecutive years of 1,000-plus runs in the same period. Renowned for his attacking intent at the top of the order, Marcus captained England and Somerset, earning an MBE for his services to cricket in 2006.
At the domestic level, he became Somerset’s most prolific batsman, recording more centuries than any other player in the club’s history. Even after retiring from international cricket in 2008, he continued to dominate county cricket, scoring double-centuries and later captaining Somerset until 2010.
Marcus detailed his journey in his autobiography ‘Coming Back To Me’, published in 2008, which won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. In it, he candidly discussed his battle with depression and the pressures of international cricket, breaking new ground in conversations around mental health in sport. Beyond writing, he has featured widely in the media, using his platform to advocate for greater awareness of mental wellbeing, as well as sharing expert insights on the game he loves.
