Rugby career:
Martin’s first played for England in 1991 but he wasn’t in the World Cup squad that year. It was in 1992 Martin played in the Five Nations Grand Slam winning side. He was part of the 1993 British Lions tour to New Zealand and in 1995 he joined the World Cup squad. His last match for England was in the 1996 Five Nations match against Wales. By then, Martin Bayfield had 31 caps for England and 3 caps for the British Lions.
His last game was against Gloucester in February 1998. It was a neck injury Martin sustained in training a few days later that forced him to retire.
Martin’s first book was published in 2022 “A Very Tall Story“. It’s Martin’s often funny and sometimes moving account of how it was in 90’s rugby.
