A stylish batsman with more than 20,000 career runs, Michael has since become a prominent broadcaster and commentator, admired for his engaging personality and sharp insight. Today, he is a highly sought-after after-dinner and keynote speaker.
Michael made his first-class debut for Yorkshire in 1993 and earned his first England cap in 1999. His batting prowess was confirmed in the 2002–03 Ashes series, where he scored 633 runs and was hailed as one of the best batsmen in the world. In 2003, he was appointed England’s Test and ODI captain, and two years later led his team to their historic Ashes victory, which earned them the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award. Over his career, Michael played 82 Test matches, 86 ODIs, and became England’s first-ever T20 captain.
After retiring from international cricket in 2009, he transitioned into broadcasting, becoming a familiar voice on the BBC’s Test Match Special and appearing across global networks, including Channel 9 in Australia. His sharp analysis and leadership perspective have made him one of the most respected figures in cricket media.
Michael has written three books, including his autobiography ‘Calling the Shots’, as well as ‘A Year in the Sun’ and ‘Time to Declare’, each offering unique insights into his life as a player and captain. In addition to his writing, he has built a strong broadcasting career, contributing to BBC Sport along with becoming a familiar television personality, appearing on popular shows such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘The Great Sport Relief Bake Off’, which further showcased his charisma and wide appeal beyond cricket.
