Dr Sian Massey-Ellis MBE is one of the most respected figures in elite football officiating, best known as a Premier League Assistant Referee and a trailblazer for women in sport. Having broken barriers at the highest levels of the game, Sian has combined more than fifteen years of experience in high performance sport with expertise in leadership, resilience and decision making under pressure. As a keynote speaker, she shares practical insights into performing at the highest level, overcoming scrutiny, embracing change and creating inclusive environments, making her an outstanding choice for leadership conferences, corporate events, sporting organisations and diversity and inclusion programmes.

Sian’s journey began with a First Class degree in Sports Science from Birmingham Newman University, before embarking on a career in education as a Physical Education Teacher and School Sport Coordinator at Foxford School. Working in schools gave her a strong understanding of motivation, communication and personal development, while continuing to pursue football officiating alongside her teaching career. This combination of education and elite sport enables Sian to connect with audiences of all backgrounds, translating high performance lessons into practical strategies for individuals and organisations.

Alongside her work in education, Sian steadily established herself as one of football’s leading officials. She became the first Englishwoman to officiate in a men’s UEFA club competition fixture in the Europa League and the first female to officiate at the FA Community Shield. Her appointment as a Premier League Assistant Referee cemented her reputation as one of the sport’s most accomplished officials. Sian’s pioneering contribution to football has been recognised through numerous honours. She was appointed MBE for her outstanding impact on football officiating and commitment to representation before receiving an Honorary Doctor of Science from Newman University in recognition of her achievements. She also serves as a Board Member of Christ the King School in Coventry and the PGMOL Inclusion and Diversity Advisory Committee. In addition, Sian continues to invest in her own development through advanced coaching and leadership programmes, including completing the Pro Ref Coaching Development Programme and a leadership course with the Women’s Sports Collective.
