Sophie Walker describes herself as a Campaigner, a Communicator and a Feminist.  The Evening Standard and Vogue both described her as a modern day suffragette.

Sophie previously worked as an international news agency journalist. For nearly twenty years she covered business, finance and politics from Paris to Washington. At the same time she was also travelling as diplomatic correspondent to Iraq and Afghanistan. She is an ambassador for the National Autistic Society. Here she campaigns for better support and understanding of autism, particularly in women and girls.  In 2012 she wrote a book, “Grace Under Pressure“. This was about the experience of raising her elder daughter, who has autism. She has always been a campaigner on disability rights.

In 2015 Sophie made headlines when she was announced as leader of the UK’s first feminist political party, The Women’s Equality Party. The party had started a few months earlier by Sandi Toksvig and the journalist Catherine Mayor.  The party fielded Fourteen candidates in the 2017 General Election. They gained more than 350,000 votes in total across London, Scotland and Wales

In January 2016 Sophie was voted to represent the WEP in the London Mayoral election on a manifesto seeking to close the city’s 23 percent pay gap; create affordable childcare and housing for women as well as accessible, safe transport; and end rising rates of sexual harassment and violence against women and girls in the capital.

Sophie is a keen runner and has said marathon training is the perfect preparation for a life in politics.  She is currently a co-director and co-founder of Activate Collective, a fund to support female community activists to run for political office.
