Steve Frew is a former elite gymnast and Commonwealth Games gold medallist who represented Scotland and Great Britain at international competitions for nearly three decades. Best known for winning gold in the men’s rings at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, he made history as Scotland’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gymnastics champion. Across a career spanning 28 years, Steve competed internationally more than 100 times, establishing himself as one of Scotland’s most successful gymnasts and a respected figure in the world of sport.

Steve’s passion for gymnastics began at a young age and developed into an extraordinary international career. Representing Scotland and Great Britain at major competitions around the world, he became renowned for his strength and technical excellence on the rings. His defining moment came at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where he delivered a historic performance to win gold in the men’s rings event at the age of 28. The victory marked Scotland’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gymnastics gold medal and cemented Steve’s place in the nation’s sporting history.

He continued competing at the highest level for several years, including representing Scotland again at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Alongside competition, Steve worked as a fitness instructor at the Livingwell Health Club in Maida Vale, London, while developing his passion for mentoring and inspiring young athletes. After retiring from elite gymnastics, he remained deeply involved in sport development, including opening the Auchterarder Gymnastics Club in Perthshire and supporting grassroots initiatives that encourage young people to engage in physical activity.

Steve has shared his experience of elite sport through various media appearances and educational initiatives. He served as a gymnastics commentator during the 2012 Olympic Games at the North Greenwich Arena and has regularly appeared across television and sports programming. His media appearances include competing on the BBC Three series Hercules, representing Glasgow on the ITV game show Simply the Best, and reaching the final of the ITV series Ninja Warrior UK in 2017. Through television and public engagement, Steve continues to promote the importance of sport, resilience and physical wellbeing.

Steve is booked as a motivational and sports speaker for his inspiring journey from young gymnast to Commonwealth Games champion. Drawing on decades of experience competing at the highest level, he shares powerful lessons on dedication, discipline and overcoming adversity. His work as an athlete mentor with the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme and the Youth Sport Trust has seen him visit schools across the UK, inspiring young people to pursue sport and build confidence. Through engaging storytelling and practical insights, Steve motivates audiences to develop resilience, set ambitious goals and achieve peak performance.
