Iwan Thomas MBE is one of Britain’s most accomplished former athletes, best known as an Olympic 400m sprinter, two time European Champion and Commonwealth Champion. Still the holder of the British and Commonwealth 400m record, Iwan established himself as one of the greatest quarter milers in British athletics history while also helping the Great Britain 4x400m relay team to Olympic silver and a long standing national relay record. Iwan’s athletics career began with an early breakthrough as part of the Great Britain 4x400m relay team that finished fifth at the World Junior Championships. Progressing rapidly through the senior ranks, he became one of Europe’s leading 400m runners, winning two European Championship titles, a Commonwealth Games gold medal and the World Cup. He represented Great Britain at the Sydney Olympic Games and was also part of the relay quartet that claimed silver at the Atlanta Olympics, setting the British 4x400m relay record that still stands today. Despite suffering major setbacks, including a stress fracture to his ankle in 1999 that required surgery and subsequent Achilles problems which ruled him out of the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Iwan demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout his career. Following retirement, he successfully transitioned into broadcasting, leading Channel 4’s Paralympic Games coverage and appearing on programmes including Superstars, Strictly Come Dancing, MotoGP Tonight and Countdown. He also regularly hosts corporate events, conferences and awards ceremonies.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to British athletics, Iwan was appointed an MBE in 1998. Alongside his European, Commonwealth and World Cup victories, he remains the current British and Commonwealth 400m record holder. He is also the author of the autobiography ‘Brutal’, in which he shares an honest account of his sporting career, injuries and life beyond athletics.
